Character Notes for "Catch a Rising Tide"
These are the character notes for "Catch a Rising Tide."

Savoir Faire (Savvy) -- Renaud Cœur is a handsome Frenchman with fair skin, shoulder-length straight brown hair, and blue eyes. He is a professional dancer with a lean fit body, not very tall. His soup friends often call him Savvy.
Origin: Act of derring-do: When a theatre caught fire during a performance, Renaud leaped into action to save members of the audience, swinging on ropes and jumping over flames. The ghost of the theatre's founder then appeared to him and bestowed superpowers.
Uniform: All black, close-fitting clothes with a dapper black coat; floppy black hat with a blue, a white, and a red ostrich plume pinned on by a gold fleur-de-lys. Standard weapons are rapier, dagger, and pistol. Savvy paints his face with stylized makeup instead of wearing a mask.
Qualities: Master (+6) Dancer, Expert (+4) Jack-of-All-Trades, Good (+2) Confidence, Good (+2) Romance.
Poor (-2) Oh, Him Again (people are often dazzled by him at first, but the more they know him, the less they like him)
Powers: Good (+2) Swashbuckling, Good (+2) Wits, Average (0) Agility, Average (0) Speed.
Vulnerability: Average (0) Sacre Bleu, Can't You See I'm French?! (avid Francophone, avid countryman; but the French flag's colors are the same as America's so that confuses people, which really pisses him off)
Motivation: Rush in to save the day.

Jack Union -- This world-class soup operates openly out of Great Britain. A baron's second son, Jack joined the army in his youth, serving with distinction. He is tall and slender, with a little muscle definition but not beefy. He has pale skin, straight dark brown hair, and blue eyes.
Origin: Jack's latent powers manifested during an intense firefight when he charged an enemy position to rescue his unit. Now in addition to his military work, he sometimes does special missions for the Queen (whom he adores because she reminds him of his grandmother).
Uniform: Standard army uniform; when on a soup mission, he adds a British flag cape.
Qualities: Master (+6) Soldier, Expert (+4) Dutiful, Expert (+4) Hand-to-Hand Combat, Good (+2) Gentleman, Good (+2) Historian, Good (+2) Ruggedly Handsome
Poor (-2) Was That Racist? (often makes oblique, questionable remarks)
Powers: Expert (+4) Strength, Expert (+4) Invulnerability, Good (+2) Adaptation, Average (0) Energy Blast, Average (0) Flight, Average (0) Speed
Motivation: Defend the honor of the United Kingdom.

Valor's Widow -- Deirdre Braden has milk-pale skin and wavy auburn hair. Her eyes have changed from hazel to glas, sea-color lit with sorrow. She has a slender, delicate build. Superheroes and supervillains alike respect her and stand aside for her. They are coming to her more and more often for help resolving disputes or other problems. Deirdre lives in San Jose.
Origin: Deirdre was the wife of Captain Valor. When Haxxor planted a bomb in San Jose and took over Captain Valor's gizmotronic armor, Deidre activated a failsafe and destroyed the armor, killing both Captain Valor and Haxxor. The sacrifice changed her from an ordinary woman to a supernary hera.
Uniform: Deidre dresses all in black, in sober styles. Sometimes she wears a black veil too.
Qualities: Master (+6) Aura of Valor, Master (+6) Loyalty to Honor, Expert (+4) Love of Captain Valor, Expert (+4) Historian, Expert (+4) Leader, Expert (+4) Mediation, Good (+2) Compassionate, Good (+2) Contacts Among Soups, Good (+2) Forethought, Good (+2) Graceful
Poor (-2) Broken Heart
Motivation: To keep the peace and uphold the memory of Captain Valor.

Junket (Brandon Drexler) -- He has pinkish-fair skin and vivid indigo eyes. Although born with black hair, it turned peacock shades of blue and green when he gained his superpower. Unlike many soups, Junket has a business degree and staunchly maintains that what he does is honest work so he should get paid for it. This clashes with a lot of the altruistic superheroes and the ruthlessly mercenary supervillains alike. He's a businessman, dammit, and he just wants people to respect that.
Origin: At his college, an experiment in Super-Gizmology got out of hand and caused an explosion. A number of students caught in the blast developed Teleporting or Super-Speed, with Junket getting the former. They all share the distinctive peacock-colored hair.
Uniform: Expensive business suit, which rather clashes with his spiky blue and green hair. He also favors heavy eye makeup in the same peacock colors. Although he does not customarily wear a mask, he does carry one of blue silk rolled up in his pocket in case he needs to conceal his identity.
Qualities: Good (+2) Business Degree, Good (+2) Fanlore, Good (+2) Fast, Good (+2) Ladies' Man, Good (+2) Networking
Poor (-2) Jumps to Conclusions
Powers: Expert (+4) Teleporting
Motivation: "Let me make this abundantly clear: I do the job, and then I get PAID."

Redbeard (Rohan and Rooney Murdock) -- He has fair skin with moderate freckles, blue eyes, and long reddish-blond hair with just a little wave. His beard is a darker fox-red. He has rogueish tattoos covering most of both arms. He came up through Sea Shepherd and Kraken, protecting the ocean from human predators. He has two wives, the Ginger Twins, Pepper (who favors Rohan) and Poppy (who favors Rooney), whose superpower is Twin Link. They have adopted a set of four orphaned siblings: Moninne (girl, 11), Adomnan (boy, 10), Dallan (boy, 3), and Tier (boy, 18 months). The Ginger Twins arranged to get pregnant at the same time so they could raise the babies as twins. Rory is the son of Redbeard (Rohan) and Pepper; Roisin is the daughter of Redbeard (Rooney) and Poppy. The babies are 6 months old.
Redbeard retired to establish Red Island in the Maldives as a refuge for redheads, who often suffer discrimination elsewhere. He sponsors the adoption of redheaded children, who may have a harder time finding families otherwise. He practices eugenics to increase the number of redheads, from singles mixers to fertility services. He helped launch the O'Malley General Clinic and Fertility Centre, which belongs to a Kraken health nexus. Redbeard is lobbying to have redheads recognized as crayon soups, a point supported by the higher incidence of superpowers (notably Second Sight, Fire Powers, Eidetic Memory, and the Bardic Gift) among redheads. While he spends much of his time running Red Island, he makes sure to spend at least one full day a week with his family.
Origin: Twins run in his family; both of his parents are twins. Rohan's Self-Duplication ability first appeared in childhood and grew in slowly. In the beginning, he could only split for a few seconds, but soon learned to hold it for a few minutes. After years of practice, he can do it for up to 13 hours.
Uniform: Casual men's clothes. He loves denim, the more distressed the better.
Qualities: Expert (+4) Retired Pirate-Activist, Good (+2) Ginger Advocate, Good (+2) Kinesthetic Intelligence, Good (+2) Leader, Good (+2) Strength
Poor (-2) Volatile Temper
Powers: Master (+6) Self-Duplication
He can only make two copies of himself, but he can stay divided for up to 13 hours. Many self-duplicators can make more copies, but few can sustain them for very long. He has different names for them, and when single, retains all the memories; but when dual, the memories divide according to which "twin" created them. He was born with the name Rohan and chose Rooney to distinguish his duplicate.
Motivation: Ginger rights.

Red hair is rare. In Scotland, Ireland, and a small part of Russia, redheads make up just over 10% of the population. In much of Europe, they make up 1-2%. In most of the rest of the world, it's well under 1%. This shows how an advantageous trait can spread within a local population. Among the tendencies they share with other soups, they often need more than the standard amount of medication.

Pepper Murdock -- She has fair skin with light freckles, gray eyes, and long wavy hair of fox-red. She is one of the Ginger Twins, along with her younger sister Poppy. (In the picture, Pepper is on the left, Poppy on the right.) They are married to Redbeard; Pepper favors Rohan. As a pirate-activist, Pepper excelled at long-range combat and strategic thinking. As a leader of Red Island, a refuge for redheads, she's turning her attention more to public speaking. She performs in a duo, playing pennywhistle to Poppy's bodhran.
Origin: The Ginger Twins were born with their abilities, although they have learned to do more over the years.
Uniform: Casual women's clothes, always matching Poppy.
Qualities: Good (+2) Long-Range Combat, Good (+2) Pennywhistle Player, Good (+2) Public Speaking, Good (+2) Retired Pirate-Activist, Good (+2) Strategic Thinking
Poor (-2) Worrier
Powers: Expert (+4) Twin Link
Motivation: To develop Red Island.

Poppy Murdock -- She has fair skin with light freckles, gray eyes, and long wavy hair of fox-red. She is one of the Ginger Twins, along with her older sister Pepper. (In the picture, Pepper is on the left, Poppy on the right.) They are married to Redbeard; Poppy favors Rooney. As a pirate-activist, Poppy excelled at hand-to-hand combat and tactical thinking. As a leader of Red Island, she listens to people and figures out what problems need to be solved. That also makes her a good mother and peacemaker in their family. She performs in a duo, playing bodhran to Pepper's pennywhistle.
Origin: The Ginger Twins were born with their abilities, although they have learned to do more over the years.
Uniform: Casual women's clothes, always matching Pepper.
Qualities: Good (+2) Bodhran Player, Good (+2) Hand-to-Hand Combat, Good (+2) Listener, Good (+2) Retired Pirate-Activist, Good (+2) Tactical Thinking
Poor (-2) Planning Ahead
Powers: Expert (+4) Twin Link
Motivation: To take care of her family.
