Poem: "For Want Of..."

This poem was inspired and sponsored by minor_architect who wanted me to write about vending machines. Instead of putting humans in front of a nonhuman machine, though, I put nonhumans in front of a human vending machine. Guess what kind popped into my mind...

For Want Of…

I know that crime is a problem,
Your Majesty, I really do …

But without crime,
We’d have no criminals;

Without criminals,
We’d have no miners;

Without miners,
We’d have no silverdisks;

Without silverdisks,
The Machines would give us no drive sleeves;

Without drive sleeves,
Our spacefleet would go nowhere;

Without the fleet,
We’re not going to win this war;

And if we don’t win the damn war,
The Ravenok are going to come and eat us all.

So no, I can’t pardon your son for breaking a window:
That’s how young people enlist these days.
