America as a Failed State
America is not a modern nation, it is a failure, and this is why.  I have been saying these things for some time now.

"I like to pay taxes. With them, I buy civilization."
~Oliver Wendell Holmes

Thanks for this; ganking and re-posting it... it will serve well in lieu of the truly blistering rant in the same vein that I feel like writing today, but have no time to write. A lot of us have been saying these things for some time now - apparently we all need to say them a lot louder and more often, and back our words up with action, money and votes.

EDIT: My bro posted this on greatpoets last night:

Poverty

The worst of ills, and hardest to endure,
Past hope, past cure,
Is Penury, who, with her sister-mate
Disorder, soon brings down the loftiest state,
And makes it desolate.
This truth the sage of Sparta told,
Aristodemus old,—
“Wealth makes the man.” On him that’s poor
Proud Worth looks down, and Honor shuts the door.

By Alcaeus
(Greek lyric poet, c.620–c.580 B.C.; banished for his resistance to tyrants. Translation by Sir William Jones)

Well ...

I agree.

The main reasons I see why people don't want to pay taxes include:

* They already don't have enough to live on. I completely sympathize with this. Nobody's ever going to be tolerant of having money taken away when they're short of it. As this is a growing group, it is a growing problem.

* They don't feel the government is responsible with its spending or competent in its work. Again, I agree with this. A road project that was supposed to take "a week" (yeah, right) has been torn up for over a month with no sign of completion soon. This problem is fixable, but people would actually have to change a lot of things to fix it.

* They are greedy. This problem pertains to the upper class. They got rich by sucking up wealth and rarely releasing any of it. While understandable, this strategy is unhealthy for them and everyone else. It can't really be fixed, but can be lowered somewhat by preventing large accumulations of wealth. When it doesn't pile up that high, it does less damage.
