Poem: "Packing Away" - The Wordsmith's Forge
The Writing & Other Projects of Elizabeth Barrette
Poem: "Packing Away"
This poem came out of the June 5, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] helgatwb and [personal profile] callibr8. It also fills the "loyalty" square in my 6-4-18 Dark Fantasy card for the Winteriron Bingo Adventure fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles.

"Packing Away"

The thing about friendship
is that sometimes it tells you
more about yourself than
about the other person.

It starts with doing
a few loads of
laundry for free.

It snowballs into
masterminding a move
from a small apartment
to another friend's couch.

That requires packing up
everything, shoveling it
into boxes, and putting
those in storage lockers.

There are cockroaches
in every single box.

It's not what you
signed up for, but
at least when it's done,
you can take pride in
having accomplished it.

The thing about loyalty
is that sometimes, it gets
you in over your head, but
it also connects you with
folks who can bail you out.
