"When They're Not Around"
Everything has a home
and a job in this world ...
and sometimes in others.
The gremlins that chew on
clothes in the washing machine
go home to their hollow hill
whenever it's empty.
The fairies that flit among
the houseplants and prisms in
the bay window are the same as
those who chase butterflies outside.
The trolls that chase cars are
always nearby, but sometimes they're
on the road and other times under the bridge.
They have their own friends and families,
just like any other creatures, and they
go about business and pleasure
here and there as they will.
When we think of them as monsters,
we forget to wonder what they're up to
when they're not around, but
life is better with a little wonder in it.
