I hope you didn't forget to tell your friend about using cardboard to kill weeds.
Most places it's free for the hauling and it slowly rots away unlike landscaper's cloth.

It's wonderful for covering up and killing weeds around shrubs or in your veggie garden.
I generally mow the weeds short and then cover them with cardboard, then a layer of fall leaves, and finally I put a layer of pretty woodchip mulch on top of it all.
Done this way, you should be able to ignore a shrub bed for at least 2 or 3 years while you work on more important things--like your edible landscaping.

I did not get around to it this time, but it will probably come up later. Cardboard and newspaper make great liners. I tend to use them for laying a new bed over grass. For shrubs and trees, I more often want groundcloth covered with chip mulch.
