Estimating Travel Times

This article says that people avoid biking or walking to work or school because they have trouble estimating how long it will take them to travel that far in that mode.  I was just boggled.  Who estimates  something important like that?  If I needed to go somewhere important, I scouted the route in advance and timed it so I would know.  At times when I was routinely walking or biking, I knew about how far I could go in a given time, so I could use that to gauge a different destination; not something I did a lot of, but I could do it.  My partner, who handles most of our driving logistics, is quite good at getting us places on time.  If people don't think of scouting a route and timing it, well, no wonder they're afraid to try other travel modes!  That just seems like such a basic skill to me, I'm surprised people have lost it.  0_o

Yeah haven't they heard that Google Maps will give you an ETA on different modes of transport including walking and biking?

I suck at both estimating ETAs and remembering how long routes took me. If I'm walking somewhere nearby, I budget 15 minutes or more walking time. If using the bus, I budget an hour no matter where I'm going, unless it's a long ways off (then I budget 2 hours), because I'd rather be early than late.
You forgot to mention the big books you bring along to read, in case you're early. If I have to be somewhere way across town at a time when I know there'll be traffic, I often leave hours early & plan to eat [with said book] before starting the activity. Then I go home afterwards, being well-fed and avoiding traffic both ways.
Oh REally...I plan on being able to walk about 3 mph (comfortably), but know that scheduling travel time is never, ever, going to be an exact science.
