DIY Generics
Hospitals have had it with price-gouging from drug companies, so they're going to make their own generics.  I wish them luck.

While it may save THEM money, I kind of doubt they will be passing the savings on to their customers.

Well ...

One problem they're trying to solve is drug companies not making generics. So if the hospitals make generics, those will again exist. The amount of improvement this creates will somewhat depend on price, but is likely to be better than nothing.

The other is price. If they do not reduce the price of generics at all, it will have no effect on clients, and part of what caregivers whine about is people who "don't take their meds." Which obviously happens if those cost five times a person's monthly income. So if caregivers want people to take their meds, then it seems likely they will attempt to present those at a more affordable price.

I don't expect this venture to behave well. I do think that if two enemies start a knife-fight with price cutting, the economic probability is that prices will fall and that will hurt both of them. Since I hate both of them and don't find either particularly useful, I suspect the chance of small improvement is real, and at least I'll get to watch them bleed. It's better than the status quo.

Stardreamer here

I'm in favor of the idea, but not happy about the makeup of the guiding board. Reps from Big Pharma and a business school? Talk about putting the foxes in charge of the henhouse!

Re: Stardreamer here

In my experience the whole health care system is so abusive that I have found only a few outliers. I would expect the listed hospitals to refuse to make anything they don't like. But when drug companies also won't make generics, or raise prices by 2000%, then I suspect that the new pool of abusers will make some things more available than the old pool of abusers. It's not that any of them care about us, you perceive, but specifically what they said: they can't get things THEY want to use. Therefore, if they're filling gaps for their own interest, it should widen the availability at least somewhat.
