Poem: "Unicorn Sign"
This poem is spillover from the January 2, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony Barrette. It also fills the "Altered States (of the Mind)" square in my 1-3-18 card for the [community profile] trope_bingo fest.

"Unicorn Sign"

The time we hiked up Harney Peak
and it rained while we were on top,
we walked back down through a world
of water droplets and rainbows.

The air was full of sunlight and
lost clouds looking for home.

It was a between-time
and a between-place,
neither raining nor dry,
mountain nor valley,
an altered state of
mind and matter.

It was neither
real nor unreal,
the edges of the world
blurred and malleable.

The raindrops falling from
the tips of the spruce trees
looked so much like the glint
of sunshine on hornpoint,

and the puddles in the trail
kept popping silver bubbles
out of nowhere, just like
horn-blessed water will,

that I watched the ground
all the way down for any hint
of heart-shaped hoofprints.

The only ones I saw were,
probably, those of deer.

I didn't see any unicorns
that day, but then again,

I didn't not see them either.

Notes:

Harney Peak is a mountain in South Dakota.
