We're getting close to owl mating season. Chances are he's announcing your area is HIS territory to all the other local owls.

That would be awesome. I think I do hear them calling more often in autumn and winter than in warmer times.
Apparently most birds of prey nest really early. This lets their own young birds be out and learning to hunt when the young of their prey animals are first out and about. That way you have inexperienced hunters fixed up with inexperienced prey to hunt.

Yes, stupid fledgling season is why young hunters survive. :D
