Extreme Vetting

Hidden in this noxious plan for extreme vetting of immigrants is a little Orwellian gem whose significance most people will miss.

ICE wants to use machine learning technology and social media monitoring to determine whether an individual is a “positively contributing member of society,” according to documents published on federal contracting websites.

Notice they're going for the soft target first. Someone a lot of people don't like: immigrants. But once that technology exists, it can be used against anyone.  People of color.  Poor people.  Elders.  The disabled.  Single mothers.  Homeless people.  Anyone society dislikes or doesn't think is "good enough."  Well, good enough for ... what?  Food, clothing, shelter, health care, anything that society might be asked to help pay for.  After all, why bother to support people who aren't good for anything?  Nevermind the rich, many of whom do exactly zero work.  And from there it grows.

Remember, when you see someone picking on a group they dislike, that tends to be the way they'd treat everyone if they thought they could get away with it.  Just because they like or tolerate you today doesn't mean they won't decide to hate you tomorrow.
