Hard Things

Life is full of things which are hard or tedious or otherwise unpleasant that need doing anyhow. They help make the world go 'round, they improve skills, and they boost your sense of self-respect. But doing them still kinda sucks. It's all the more difficult to do those things when nobody appreciates it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our accomplishments and pat each other on the back.

What are some of the hard things you've done recently? What are some hard things you haven't gotten to yet, but need to do?

I badly need to get busy and sew myself some clothes.
My problem is that I'm a procrastinator of the worst sort--I badly need to get myself over the idea that "I need wait until I lose weight first".
One good thing is that I've finally found someone who can help me do the pattern fitting before I sew. (Few things put you off of sewing like making something only to find out that what you've made doesn't fit you properly.)

Mind if I ask you what you find scary to do?
:^)

Go for it!

I have the tendency, but have largely reversed it. I hate feeling rushed, so I learned to do things early. It helps to think through why you procrastinate and try to address that.

That's a hard one.

Yay!

That's true. However, there are features that make garments more forgiving so they don't need to be sized as precisely, such as:

* Stretchy fabrics, like knits.

* Loose or draping patterns.

* Drawstrings, double buttons, elastic, string ties, belts, slide-buckle straps, and anything else that allows you to adjust the finished garment.

One of my favorite skirt patterns literally cannot be outgrown. Take some fabric, as much as you like depending on the effect you want. I usually buy in one-yard lengths and use the width, so a panel is typically 45" or 60" wide. For two straight panels you can split a single yard. Most of my skirts in this style are either two or three full-width panels. Hem one end into a wide channel for elastic or drawstring. Elastic is less work to get into and out of, but you might have to change it if you grow or shrink a LOT. Drawstrings, you just adjust where you tie them. Hem the other edges smooth. You can sew the sides together or leave them open. If you want to get fancy, you can cut the ends round into a half-circle or full-circle skirt, or put lace on the ends. But really, the pattern is just hanging a lot of fabric on a string around your waist, and it looks gorgeous.

Driving. No amount of practice can compensate for the fact that one of my senses is badly distorted -- a vehicle always feels much bigger to me than it really is. It's nerve-wracking. The effect is somewhat less awful when I'm riding rather than driving.

There isn't much that really scares me, though. Farmemory puts a lot of things into perspective. Once you've seen whole planets blown up, lesser calamities just don't have as much impact.
