Poem: "Magic Wands and Wrenches"

This poem was prompted and sponsored by moosl. It is what's called an "ekphrastic poem" -- one inspired by another work of art, in this case a spectacular frame of Girl Genius by Phil Foglio and Kaja Foglio.

Magic Wands and Wrenches

Fairy tales are made to be retold.

Talking cats, whether they come
from spilled magic or
from genetic engineering,
remain the same aloof felines.

Cinderella’s pumpkin coach
becomes a chandelier contraption
of bouyant balloons and lambent lanterns
above a delicately vined recliner,
ready to carry the girl genius
to the Prince waiting to be impressed.

She is no stranger to magic wands and wrenches,
hardly needs a fairy godmother to get started –-
this, too, is retold and made anew,
suited to inspire modern girls.

Who says
magic and techology can’t mix?
If you do it right,
you can leave your audience
shaken and stirred.

I think that the Foglios would really love to see this poem.
I thought so too, so I dug around on their site until I found contact info. Hopefully it will get through their (doubtless overworked) spam filter.
I enjoyed this one. It was fun
Elizabeth,

Great Poem!!! It beautifully captures the spirit of excitement, exploration and expansion that is alive and well in the Pagan community nad everywhere that magic is afoot.

If I could write music I'd write music to this one, I truly would.
It might work. A running theme through Girl Genius is the intricate humming that Agatha makes when she's inventing things. *chuckle* A didgeridoo might be suitable...

Usually it's my lyric poetry that I wish could be set to music, but the one that actually got recorded was another free-verse piece, "Surface Tension."
