Art Imitates Life: Skin Color in Video Game

A huge thumbs up to the upcoming video game South Park: Fractured But Whole for turning a joke into a literal video game. The easiest level has the lightest skin tone.  As you select harder levels, your character's skin tone gets darker.  :D

Yes, there are video games like this in T-America.  Black people tend to love the honesty.  A lot of white people whine that it's inaccurate.  But it's not.  You can get them with gender shifts, or class, or other things; and a few even have interstitial options.

It's not picking up sexual orientation. It's picking up physical features that often correlate with sexuality. For instance, notice the more feminine appearance of the composite gay and the faintly masculine lesbian. You see a bit of that pattern with hormonal variations that correlate with genetic predisposition, which may or may not match the actual preferences. But it'll miss the bears and the lipstick lesbians, probably also a lot of closeted queers who put concerted effort in presenting straight.

Sure, the program could do a lot of damage. But that 10-20% error rate is enough to bring lawsuit doom on anyone who tried to use such a system, because nothing makes straight men go absolutely apeshit like calling them gay. And if that doesn't work, there's always mob violence. I may not approve of homophobes, but in this case I rely on their zealotous self-interest to kill this kind of project every time it rears its ugly head. They might love the idea of trouncing gays, but they hate the idea of being mistaken for one.
