Poem: "13 Reasons Why"

This is the freebie for the May [community profile] crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from [personal profile] kengr.

"13 Reasons Why"

Each society asks,
"Why do children love their parents?"

and the answer are always different
and always the same.

It begins with
striking two stones together
to spark a new life

and continues in
the nurturance of that life
until it floats free.

It is there in
the late-night feedings

and the early-morning smiles.

Love grows in holding hands
through the first steps

and learning, together,
how to let go.

It flourishes in the kitchen,
cooking as a family,

and in the dining room,
sharing stories over the table.

In the holidays,
love blossoms like
seasonal flowers as
people share the occasion.

It is trying
and failing and
trying again in school.

It is sympathizing
over the awkwardness
of adolescence

and the grace of adulthood
finally achieved --

yet knowing,
always knowing,
that the bond between
parent and child is

Oh, there are
the new reasons
unique to each culture,
but the core of it is simple

and as universal as life itself.
