Poem: "Cracks and Shadows"

This poem is from the April 4, 2017 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] k_a_webb and [personal profile] kelkyag. It also fills the "shadow" square in my 4-1-17 card for the Month of Rainbows fest. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] daisiesrockalot. It belongs to the Monster House series.

"Cracks and Shadows"

So many of the residents
live in cracks and shadows:

the monsters in-the-closet
and under-the-bed,

the troll in the basement
who speaks through the tube,

the radiator dragon hiding
living coils within metal ones,

the lurking shadow that
slips anywhere just beyond
the reach of the light,

the seeing-eye gremlin
who cannot be seen,

and out in front of the house,
the cracken who lives in the lines
between the sections of sidewalk
and nips at the shoelaces of
pedestrians strolling by.

"They're everywhere, aren't they,"
my nephew says, toying with
the rainbow bracelet on his wrist.

"Yes," I assure him, "we are."

The rainbow in various guises is a symbol of gay pride, such as this bracelet.
