The history of my mind is
tied up in yarn of many colors.
Crochet is memories
of my grandmother making
slippers for Christmas,
the rainbow yarn forming
its own bright design.
There were, too,
the pink pigs with
the green leaves and
the red flowers on them.
Crochet is memories
of my grandmother making
afghans of granny squares
or endless zig-zags.
Then she would make
box-bottom blankets with
the remnants of yarn in
their tiny colorful balls
that I loved to tumble
through my hands.
Crochet is memories
of my grandmother's needle
winking silver as starlight and
the soft sound of her humming
as she changed yarn into
useful, beautiful things.
Her hands were gentle over mine
as she tried to teach me skills
that slipped through my fingers,
but it didn't matter that I was
no good at crocheting -- the time
was well spent simply because
we spent it together.
Crochet is memories
impervious to the passage of time.

Many slipper patterns exist. Ours was similar to this, usually worked in rainbow yarn.
I could not find anything similar to the pig with applique leaves and flowers. However, the basic pattern resembled this one for a spotted pig, and I had numerous piggies that were plain pink or black-and-white.
Granny squares are easy to make and come in many styles. You can make a lovely blanket with one base color (often black or white) and small amounts of many other colors.
What our family calls a box-bottom blanket is typically called a stashbuster online. Most often these were done in simple granny stripes or ripples as collected in this set of patterns. It's basically a way to use up whatever leftover bits of yarn you have in your craft box.

Crocheting is to knitting...maybe as native language is to non-native language, in the brain? For me it feels similar, anyway. I *can* crochet, and I *can* read French, but that takes a conscious effort. Knitting and reading English (often at the same time) feel "natural."

But my yarn stash is like that, my fabric stash more-so. I have fabrics my mom used in quilts, and yarn from friends or leftover from projects I loved... This poem feels like that.
