1) Handwrite each vocabulary word 20 times.
2) Fix the concept of one word in mind (not the English translation, but the concept itself).
3) Write that word 10 times.
4) Check for mistakes. If there are any mistakes, write that word another 10 times. Repeat until a perfect 10 is achieved.
5) If there are no mistakes, move to the next word and repeat steps 2 through 4 for that word until all have been memorized.
The key is concentrating on the concepts, not the English words; and on hammering the words into your hand-memory as well as your mind-memory. This is especially useful for languages that use a different script than English uses. My first Russian teacher asked me why I had such elegant handwriting. I flipped to the back of my notebook and showed her the practice pages. She was flabbergasted. Apparently nobody else was doing that sort of thing.
