Hard Things

Life is full of things which are hard or tedious or otherwise unpleasant that need doing anyhow. They help make the world go 'round, they improve skills, and they boost your sense of self-respect. But doing them still kinda sucks. It's all the more difficult to do those things when nobody appreciates it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our accomplishments and pat each other on the back.

What are some of the hard things you've done recently?

I am very afraid of public speaking and my daughter's teachers asked me to come in and do a class on voice acting and maybe public speaking. I don't think they understood that as a voiceover artist, I generally stand in a small recording booth _by myself_. I managed to get myself together and teach the class today and my daughter got many compliments from her classmates (not just her friends) so I felt like maybe it wasn't terrible.

Wow. That one is very difficult to get past. I happen to love public speaking myself, but I know most people don't, so I have a lot of sympathy.

Most people don't know how that profession works. I have an idea because it's often an extra in the animation that my partner collects -- they'll put a clip in the special features and show how the animators used inspiration from the voice actors. It's very demanding because you have to do everything with sound, you can't rely on expression or body language.

If you got through it without throwing up, freezing, or having a panic attack and you conveyed something about your topic, then you did adequately. If you got good audience feedback, then you did well. Yay!
That's huge - congratulations! It's always hard to get across anything new and different, even without the anxiety.
