Poem: "No 'I' in Team"

This poem came out of the November 8, 2016 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony Barrette.

"No 'I' in Team"

In the military,
all men are brothers,
all women are sisters.

There is a bond
forged in fire,
quenched in blood.

These are the ties
that twine together,
the ties that bind.

There is no "I" in team,
just the man on your right
and the man on your left.

An effective unit becomes
a family of choice, service buddies
facing the challenges together.

It is an affinity which lingers after
the last call is made, the uniforms
folded away for the final time.

It is this which inspires
the traditional toast:
To absent friends.

Unit cohesion is an important part of military life.

"To absent friends" is a traditional toast in various military services.
