Machisimo and Environmentalism

Apparently people think saving the Earth is for pussies.  Whatever happened to good old-fashioned "you fuck up my territory, I will tear your face off" protectiveness?  I mean really.  You jerks should turn in your cock and balls, you're embarrassing the rest of manhood.  >_<

The article focused a bit on purchasing behaviors, and it has been shown that a lot of that is decided down in the "reptilian brain", the brain stem, where decisions are made by very primitive motives. So, yeah, guys will unthinkingly avoid buying things that might hurt their image.

The example of people buying cars, given way back when, was similar. Yes, one could buy small cars, ones that used less fuel. But, don't know why, women and men preferred the SUVs. Perhaps because, in an accident, the kids would be more protected. But, on the conscious level, it didn't even get that far. "Why buy the big car? I don't know, I love it, that's all!"

Your link points out that a bit of rebranding would help. If advertising could make people think that it is strong and responsible to smoke cigarettes, I think it could push the idea that "doing your business without injuring the Earth" would be strong and responsible, too.

Yet another example of how I am not human. It's rare for me to like something without knowing why. Even when I shop for things like clothes, I look for features: comfort, durability, type and texture of fabric, color, etc. How well it suits my personality is important, but if it's uncomfortable then I can't wear it no matter what it looks like. For larger purchases, I do research in advance when at all possible. I want to identify meaningful features, compare which are better, and then pick the best for my needs.

I shop for green products by preference, but that is balanced against expecting organic food to be tasty (often it's not) and cleaning supplies to remove grime (many don't). I'll buy a product whose politics I dislike if it works better than others, but I do it grudgingly: always watching for something better. I have no idea why people call this "support" when I will not only stab that company in the back but organize the mob needed to do so. You should just see all the petitions I've signed.

I think environmentalism is a Terran thing, not a gender thing. But if people want to talk gender? Let's bring back good old husbandry. The testicles not currently attached to my body are all in favor of that.

I wish we had the Terramagne-American rule about how companies have to serve the public good, by offering products and/or services of value to the populace, not just exist for the purpose of lining their own pockets, making crap, bilking people, etc. They are not allowed to wreck the environment in the process. Sometimes shit still happens, but at least the culprits are more likely to be held accountable -- because even if the official court doesn't do the job, the court of public opinion picks up the slack. This is why so many T-American corporations have worthy causes to offset the unavoidable costs of doing business. You can't make lumber without cutting trees, but you can use tree farms instead of clearcutting old growth, and if you chuck a percentage of your profits into food forests or national parks then it balances out.
