Poem: "All the Important Things"

This poem came from the November 3 fishbowl, second-most-popular in the followup poll. It was inspired by a prompt from whuffle and it features one of my favorite historic figures. (In fact, several of my personal heras are strong black women.) This November, I'm especially pleased to remember Rosa Parks ... I think she'd be thrilled to see how far we've managed to come.

All the Important Things

History’s full of important things –
big battles and bright inventions,
all the busyness that men get up to
in the cities and the civilizations.

They’re like to forget the little things
and the little people – women in particular.
They’re like to forget all about them
until something up and bites them in the ass.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned
about history, it’s this:
the biggest changes start
with the smallest seeds,
the way an avalanche starts
with two snowflakes getting frisky.

One day I wondered out loud,
“How did Rosa Parks find the energy
to stand up to the bus driver
instead of going to the back of the bus?
She was a secretary and a seamstress –
she had to be tired half to death!”

“Let me tell you,” my teacher replied,
“All the important things in the world
are done by tired people.”

What a wonderful poem. Thanks for the validation. I am feeling like a wuss because I am not out there protesting Prop. 8. But, I am sure that I will find some other way to express myself.
Oh, I love that!! I love that so very much.
I'm glad that people are enjoying this poem.
Did you happen to hear the little blurb that went around just before the election? "Rosa sat so Martin could march. Martin marched so Barack could run. Barack is running so our children can fly."
That is so sweet! I love it.

I hope he flies them to Mars.
WOW! I'd like permission to share that to a wider audience if I may? If permission is granted, how would you wish your name to appear?
You're welcome to link back to it here. If citing it elsewhere, please credit Elizabeth Barrette.
*chuckle* Done.
I'm glad you like it enough to share.
