Like This: Professionalism in Writing

Being a professional writer means throwing the whole weight of your talent behind your projects. For many of us, reading something incompetently written can generate a desire to do it right. In this post, rolanni discusses Local Custom and Scout's Progress along those lines. The result is worth tacking to your wall labeled "Like This."

The difference is, I think, that rolanni took the general concept and turned it into a book of her own, while others see the idea and write fanfic. Not that there is something intrinsically wrong with fanfic, but I still think it's a hobby seperate from 'writing for publication' - they share a lot of traits, but they're not the same.
I agree that rolanni did something original and interesting with the idea. However, the underlying trope being criticized ("Secret Baby") is apparently a mainstay of the romance genre, appearing in published (presumably written with professional intent) novels rather than fanfic.
