Hi! I just Friended you, and since you said in your Profile that you were interested in how people found your journal, I thought I'd leave a quick comment. I noticed your reposting of this post in creativewriter, and found the article very well constructed. I came and read your profile and thought you sounded like a very interesting and eclectic person. I'm an aspiring writer; still working the "professional" part.

(Also, in the interests of being open & honest: my wife and I have recently opened a SF/F magazine that we also intend as a resource for writers, and I was considering soliciting you for publication submissions.)
I'm glad we met, and that you liked the article. (Click the "Torn World," "Seshaa," and "linguistics" tags in this blog for some of my other work with invented languages.)

Congratulations on your new magazine! What is it like? Is it a paying publication? I'm actually looking for new regular gigs right now, either writing or editing. I've done both writing of my own and coaching other people.
Unfortunately it's not a paying market... yet. We're working on that. Since we just started we're working on a shoestring budget - that is, we spent the entire budget on a single shoestring. But it's our intention to offer at least a token payment as soon as we can afford it. Right now we offer copy as compensation; we're doing a limited print run (100 copies) of each issue.

Please check it out if you want: Crossed Genres. The first issue will be released on December 1; we're very pleased with how it's shaped up (except that an editor who was supposed to write an article for us kind of flaked out, but I think I've got it covered!).
Hmm ... have you considered cyberfunded creativity as a possible funding method? There are already some magazines that do that. You might want to check out crowdfunding too.

I have a post on how to attract good writing without breaking a magazine's budget:

Would you be interested in poetry or book reviews? Short stuff like that I can sometimes do for a pays-in-copy market.
There's some very good ideas in that post I hadn't considered. Some probably wouldn't work for us, but several would be could help. Thanks!

Poetry and book reviews: not at the moment. We're not planning on having book/film reviews as part of the content, although articles that have deeper analysis might be acceptable. At the moment we're not really considering poetry, but I don't see why we couldn't as long as it fit the basic guidelines (other than wordcount). I'll have to think about that.
Different ideas will work for different markets; if you think of new ones, by all means feel free to share those too.

As for poetry, I have a couple posts aimed at editors who handle (or are considering) poetry:
