The Gift of Fulfillment

Every once in a while, I get an opportunity to gorge myself on something I love. I believe that the experience of having enough, of having so much that you're completely satisfied and gratified and feel no urge for any more just then, is valuable for creating an ongoing awareness of fulfillment that can help get you through the leaner times. It's something I enjoy both in the giving and in the receiving. I remember one Christmas when I asked for exactly four things and got all four of them; I remember one birthday when I was allowed to pick out as many books as I could carry at the bookstore.

Today it was books again. My friend janetmiles is visiting, and she brought with her several large boxes full of cookbooks in need of a good home where they would be loved and used. So my partner and I spent a couple of very happy hours sorting through the books and deciding which ones to keep. Partway through I paused to think "Ack, where are we going to put all of these?" but then I figured that we could get a couple more cheap stackable bookshelves and put them under the far side of the bar like we've done on the near side. So that's no problem. Tomorrow we'll have a bunch more people over, who will also doubtless enjoy the opportunity to romp through boxes of free books.

I am grateful for having such experiences of fulfillment.

fulfillment as you speak of is very close to gratitude -- another very important thing.

I am glad to see that someone besides myself is conscious of this.
It's a favorite motif. I put a little section on "Thanksgiving Prayers" in my chapter on prayers in _Composing Magic_. I've also got an article slated for PanGaia on "The Richness of Giving."
When I hear the word "gorge" from you I immediately think "BOOKS".
*laugh* Yep, you know me.
