Saturday Yardening

Today is rainy.

I went out to throw grass and clover seed on some bare spots left by tree trimming.  I covered the area around the septic tank, the end of the driveway, and the prairie garden.

Wild strawberries are getting ripe.  I found one in the prairie garden.  :D  Mulberries are getting close.

EDIT:

Round two: transplanted ornamental grass and wildflowers from random places in the yard to the prairie garden and the wildflower garden.

Found more wild strawberries to eat.  <3

Round three: put the solar-powered flicker lights around the barrel garden.  Put the red flags next to the newly planted tree and shrub seedlings.  Transplanted more wildflowers from the yard to the prairie garden.

Round four: weeded cistern garden around herbs.  Planted basil seeds there.  Pulled more weeds from patio.

Blueberries are beginning to ripen at our nature preserve. We're hoping the birds & squirrels leave us some this year!
Good luck with that. I doubt I'll get any of the serviceberries, which taste much like blueberries. >_<

The mulberries are ripe but I haven't had time to pick any.
The ones near us are mostly out of reach. The blackberries are beginning to make berry shapes.

The climate's out of kilter. A couple of years ago, the redbuds lasted 6 weeks, much longer than usual. That was also the year the roses barely lasted a week, & the wild azaleas not much longer. This year, the redbuds were 3-4 weeks, & the azaleas trailed out over almost 2 months, in wavelets of bloom. The roses were fewer, but lasted over 2 weeks. The firewheels are gone, & we miss them, but the vinca rebounded nicely, the yarrow is thriving, & the red & purple salvia looks like a veritable tabernacle of open-mouthed singers.
The nature center at our preserve has an elevated barrel under a downspout to catch rainwater. I told the ranger they should call it the cistern chapel.

Good one.
