Captain America: Civil War

We watched the movie today. This review is in generalities rather than specifics, so not really spoilery, but I'll fold the page just in case.

Okay, one specific detail: the Wakandans spoke a language with click phonemes like what X!hosa has. <3

The jokes: funny. The movie made me laugh a lot. But so did Iron Man 3 and it was on the whole also a failure.

The fight scenes: mostly well choreographed with some lovely bits of situational awareness.

Steve&Bucky action: pretty good.

The plot: there is not enough W in FT for this. >_<

The characterization: there is not enough EFA in the world for this. :/

None of it really hung together well, unless you want to extrapolate that the idiot balls were somehow magnetized.

It's really another iteration of tearing down heroes, in this case hacking apart a team rather than an individual. Somehow, Jump Up Johnny just doesn't seem like enough. Okay, the complaints about collateral damage were valid in that better damage control would definitely be advisable. But exactly what did the complainants think the whackjobs were going to do? Make sure nobody got hurt? Do you have a Plan B for the next time destructive shit rains from the sky and you've alienated the people most able to address that scale of problem? Didn't think so, no.

I am left with the conclusion that if this is how society fantasizes about heroes -- as punching bags -- it's so fucked up, I don't even know where to start sticking a wrench. I think I'd have a better chance of repairing Bucky's arm. "It seems to run on some kind of electricity." 0_o

I was actually more entertained by the trailers before the movie. "The Shallows" left me going "I think they just put their chocolate in my peanut butter." I don't think I've ever seen someone try to use logic and science in an action/thriller movie, instead of maximizing violence, but here's this BAMFette on a rock timing how fast the shark is swimming as part of calculating what seems to be an incredibly strategic plan. Must look this up. My competence kink is crushing pretty hard on this so far.

As for Civil War, I am left torn between wanting to give Rabid City a few brisk smacks for similarly abusing its superheroes, or wanting to borrow Groundhog and Cassandra's favorite park because my eyeballs need a shower now.

Summary: Save your money unless you enjoy torture!pr0n and/or you are writing something about modern society's tendency to destroy heroes.

Thats sweet
I think the personality of the "liaison" the Avengers were faced with had a lot to do with the negative outcomes. My recollection of past versions is that the character has always been the a------ who would do that sort of thing to those of that nature whom he got in his power.

Also a positive character arc I'd like to comment on but spoilers.

Well yes. He is a giant asshole and everything he touches turns to shit. I am reminded of Secretly HYRDRA In Every Last Department, because daaaamn that was never going to end well. Which is not a spoiler because it is obvious from the trailer full of things on fire and people screaming at each other. >_<

I did notice a few things that did not suck. But then more suck happened. *sigh* Talk about shoveling through a roomful of manure in search of a pony. I am charmed by the click phonemes though. I now have this burning desire to hear Black Panther singing "Quongqothwane" (aka "The Click Song," which even I cannot pronounce although I can rough my way through the X!hosa phonemes).
Did you stay all the way through the credits?
Yes. Even after they started playing ghastly pop music that didn't fit with anything. O_O I have to admit that I was amused by the last tidbit. Way to be honest without being specific.
I am amazed the number of people at the session I was at who did not wait to see what the credit cut scenes were....

This is a Marvel movie, people. There is this value-adding thing that they do. *face palm*
I knew about them doing that, but after such a crapfest movie I can sympathize with the people who scrammed as soon as the main feature concluded. I sat through the whole stupid pop song thinking "There had better be a payoff at the end of this thing or I am going to be pissed."
I recently watched this film. Action great , Steve and Bucky bromance great. Spiderman was way too young and superfluous. The tearing down of heroes is getting somewhat a tired trope indeed.

It was like watching a cocker spaniel run into traffic. >_<

I think it's becoming a stop-trope. Stop, trope! Stop, I say! Die die DIE! Because some stories do actual harm, and that is not okay.
I'd be interested in your thoughts on this, though you may of course decline: https://youtu.be/aHQ27QF6H-c It's a 6-minute review of the movie that rather makes me want to see it, where yours makes me want to stay rather far away.

It may be a case of lenses, preferences or the like, but it intrigues me because you're both intelligent, storytelling focused people who seem to have had nearly opposite reactions to this one.

Pity. I'd be satisfied with the Maximoffs showing up for a reasonable amount of time and doing something well, but even that was not to be.
