New Project: Torn World

I've gotten involved with a new cyberfunded creativity project called Torn World, started by ellenmillion. Right now it's in the very early stages of formation, so it will be a while before it's ready for the public. Meanwhile, I'm adding a "Torn World" tag for tracking updates.

I'm on the team constructing the language family. Yes, family: we're starting with an Ancient language and two descendant languages, Northern and Southern. Designing a conlang as part of a team, rather than doing it all myself, is a new experience for me. In some ways it's harder, because I have to wait for other people's responses and we don't always agree on everything. But in other ways it's easier; I can draw on other people's experience (waves at padparascha who is all happy about getting to use her linguistics degree) and we'll be able to assign subtasks to different people. I think this also correlates more closely to how natural languages evolve; they are inherently collaborative efforts by a group of people who want to communicate. Because this material is intended for enjoyment by people who aren't all xenolinguists, we're making some different choices than we might when building a model language for personal amusement. It's designed to be user-friendly, thus easy to pronounce and largely regular in construction. I feel that I'm learning a lot about constructed languages and pushing my understanding of xenolinguistics into new areas.

I'm also contributing ideas toward some of the geography, flora and fauna. (The coolest ones are already in place, though: just wait until you see Ellen's snow-unicorns!) So far there is the cold, wild north; the settled, structured south; a bizarre desert; and some barren lands. The first two cultures are beginning to take shape; more will emerge in time. I'm exploring what kinds of poetry they each like. Eventual site content is intended to include fiction, poetry, and art.

We're discussing a wide range of options for cyberfunded creativity. As that develops, it'll eventually show up over on crowdfunding.

Torn World is a delightfully weird place. I look forward to introducing you-all to it when the time is right. Until then, you can peek at the preliminary cover and watch for further teaser posts here.

I read some of your contributions to the geography--very cool! I need to sit down and go through them all and organize my own ideas--so far I'm just in the language section, but I want to branch out once I'm not quite so busy.
The idea of making a language family is just beyond awesome. *marvels at this project*
It is awesome.
