POLITICAL: What is America's Mission?

[Bad username: mount_oregano"] compares American vs. Spanish politics. I follow with some thoughtful discussion questions.

What do you think America's "mission" is or should be? What is our driving ideal or vision?

How does that compare to the visionary stances of the presidential candidates?

If you're not comfortable with America's prevailing vision, what are you doing to change it?

Personal view: We have a lot of problems and issues here at home and we should be concentrating on that first rather than trying to be the rest of the planet's Mommy and Daddy. I agree we have a mission and need a focus, but I feel it should be here at home first.

We have some of the most advanced health care, but many Americans don't even have access to the basics. We have the ability to feed just about everyone in our country from our own lands, but we are either selling it elsewhere or paying farmers not to grow certain crops leaving middle America flocking to the food banks in droves. We are so trapped by overseas oil, it's not funny.

We need to find ways to clothe and feed American, make sure individuals can get the basic health care they need and the country has the energy we need. I'm not advocating universal welfare. I feel there are a lot of ways we can find middle grounds in jobs, wages and support systems.

To this end, I'm making sure I vote. I write my elected representitives with my views and opinions. I try to find ways at home and in my comunity that I can make a difference by volunteering and such.

Right now, I don't care if the rest of the world respects us or not - *I* want to be able to respect us by taking care of those who have made their homes here.
I want to make sure that we meet the needs of Americans, because that's our first responsibility as a society. But part of that entails starting to repair the massive damage done to America's standing among other nations, because if everyone hates us -- particularly for valid reasons -- then that's not a safe or healthy situation.
I think we're saying basically the same thing, but my wording may not have been as clear as I meant it to be. We need to take care of the the concerns and problems of our own people first and, by doing that, I believe that our standing as a nation as a whole will improve.
