There was a Star Trek Next Generation episode in which Picard was stranded on a planet with an alien captain. Neither could understand anything the other said.

But the alien language was built on the basic building block of storytelling. It wanted Picard to tell a story.

He didn't want to, at first. Is there any point if the words aren't understood? But then he realized the story somehow had a life beyond the words. So he started (with all of Patrick Stewart's Shakespearean training).

With wide hand gestures and a loud voice, he grabbed the alien's attention with one phrase ..."GILGAMESH!" And proceed to tell the story.

There is value in the story, even if it is in an alien language, if told well.

Yes...

"Darmok" is one of the greatest works of xenolinguistic SF ever made. <3

I was yelling translations in less than a minute. Like a football fan screaming at a quarterback.
