How to Gird a Dress

So there you are, in your dress, and something needs killing.  You do this.

To make sure you can always run and fight, consider these points in dress shopping:

* A long loose skirt allows a full stride and can be girded in the manner shown.
* A short stretchy skirt will work just fine without girding, but the flash risk is higher.
* A narrow skirt must have a slit accommodating your full stride, neither too long nor too short.
* Never wear stiff balloon skirts, tight pencil skirts, or anything else that could get you killed because you cared more about appearances than survival.  For the same reason wear low heels or dress flats.

Well I'll be d@mned!
I'll heard of the term but never had any idea what it actually constituted!
8^o

EDIT:
A smart lady would plan for this and have some discreet ties sewn into the seams at the waist and sides with an eye toward safely stowing those skirts up and out of the way in an emergency!
:^)

I can't tell if this is related to the saying "Gird your loins" or not, seeing as I never figured out what that actually means.
It is, and the original graphic showed a man in a tunic. This is a spoof. It still works though.
As far as I've been able to work out, it means 'put some clothes on your lower half.'

So let's not discuss ungirding our loins! :o)
Seriously...these are also valid considerations in terms of walking home, running for a bus, or disarming a would-be mugger. (And these criteria, not fashion, dictate what's in my closet.) Thank you for the illustration.
Also true. Look at women's fashions throughout history and you can see how much has been designed literally to make the prey easier to catch. Never make yourself easier to catch! Though as one reader pointed out, if you can quickly bail out of the hindrance, you may consider a few seconds' delay worth it if you value fashion very highly.
