The Bias Against Women

Becomes very sharp in moving from shortlist to winner of major literary awards.  These awards influence future contracts and earnings.  When they go almost entirely to men, that contributes to the overall trend of women being paid less and otherwise rewarded less for the same jobs.

It would be great to do a study with people ranking stories by quality.  In the control group, leave the original author names intact and have equal amounts of stories by male and female authors (plus other, if you want to be fully inclusive).  In the second group, switch the genders of the authors.  In the third group, remove all the names and just judge based on stories.  See if the perceived authorial gender changes how people rate the stories.
