About Fury Road

So everyone is talking about Mad Max: Fury Road and I am starting to contemplate actually watching this movie. I'm not as much a fan of postapocalyptic stuff as I used to be, but daaaamn the buzz is strong with this one.  Thanks to [personal profile] technoshaman for the link.

Does sort of make you wonder what the next one will be like.
"ok, we burnt down the patriarchy.... now what?"
I've seen characters do that. The next step is building a better society not based on crotch privilege. Which I have also written in small and large scales.

There was a writing exercise that was basically just "Write the worst thing you can think of." Okay, done. "Now make it even worse."

I had to raise my hand and say, "Um, I just destroyed the universe in the first part."
You destroy one universe and they never let you forget it!

Well, here's the thing about the Mad Max movies - Max is our window to the world, so to speak. He's our witness. So if the next movie follows that same theme (like the previous three), then I would expect us to open on a completely different scenario somewhere else.
If I were writing a string-of-beads series, but wanted to include some aspects of continuity, I would have him run across later iterations of the same themes in his new encounters. Not the same people, but different people who had encountered similar issues along the same timeframe, so that he gets to see later developments of those themes. So in this movie he helped some women escape captivity. In a sequel he might pass through a women's farming collective.

Point... it's a fractured world he lives in. Actually, weirdly enough, it's probably got more diversity then ours.

Hmm... it would be interesting if somewhere in that grim dark and bleak world, there's a tiny oasis of hope and peace. [which Max could then defend presumably.]

It still has an issue with a lack of PoC, but for women, it's an important movie, and a huge step forward. It's well worth seeing on the big screen, too.

I will say that I was kinda surprised at the wailing - the Mad Max movies have always had strong women in them. I keep wondering if maybe people have just forgotten that because they haven't watched the original three in so long.
The originals had the strong women in supporting roles though, it was CARS, Max and then them... in that order.

This one, eh, he's there, but it's mostly a supporting role as far as I can see.
Maybe the next movie will deal with people of color in a similar fashion to how this movie dealt with women.

Which would make Mad Max a culture hero.
