Poem: "The Doll House"

Here is the freebie poem for today's fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from minor_architect. Since the topic is so timely, I decided to share this one today rather than wait for an editor to buy it.

The Doll House

When the witch’s house was foreclosed upon,
she went quietly.
She packed her black dresses and her brooms.
She closed and latched the oven door.
She dug up the belladonna, the foxglove, the hemlock
and carried them away in pots.

Of course, with the housing market
in such dire straits,
ordinary buyers were hard to find.
So the bank’s real estate broker showed the house,
in person or in photos mailed and emailed all over,
to anyone who might be enticed to make an offer.
Mostly that meant showing it to other bankers
and brokers and investors looking for bargains.

“Hmm,” they would say, “it’s not a bad place …
rather small, though.” Or “It’s quaint, don’t you think?”
That sort of thing.

Then they’d see the last room.
“Oh my! What an amazing collection of dolls. Look –
little three-piece suits and business dresses and even briefcases!”
That’s what they’d say, and then they’d ask,
“But what are these still doing here?
They must be worth a lot of money.”
“I guess the previous tenant must have left them,”
the bank’s broker would say, then prompt,
“Would you like to make an offer on the property?”

But no matter what they said that day,
none of them were ever heard from again,
and the house stood empty…

… except for the dolls.

I love it :)

And I finally figured out where I know your name from when I saw the masthead in a magazine I subscribe to...then the table of contents in an herbal almanac....

Not the most observant witchee around!
Yes, I used to edit PanGaia magazine, and I have assorted material in many of the Llewellyn annuals. The 2009 issues are out now if you want to watch for the Herbal Almanac, Magical Almanac, Spell-a-Day Almanac, Witches' Datebook, and Witches' Calendar.
*grin* This is perfect.
I'm glad you like it.
Lesson the First: In an otherwise empty house, a room full of dolls is downright terrifying.

Lesson the Second: Don't evict a witch. Ever.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to hide under the bed...

*shiver*
I sent someone under the bed! Yay me!

I know some folks who are working a haunted event (including a barn, a hayride, a corn maze, etc.) and they're keeping track of how many people pee themselves.

I have a couple other pieces from some time ago -- a matched set, poem and short-short story -- about some inquisitors descending on a witch's cottage.

You can imagine how well that turned out.
I sent someone under the bed! Yay me!

You did! It was nice and cozy under there, too, until our resident bogeyman said the place wasn't big enough for the both of us and kicked me out. The nerve of some creatures...! ;)

*laughs*

I worked a haunted house once, which took place in a high school. I hid out in one of the girl's bathrooms, kinda like Moaning Myrtle! Every time a tour group walked by, it was my job to throw myself against the door and scream like I was being murdered. Sometimes I burst out of the bathroom and raced down the hall, right through the middle of everybody! Heheheh. It was awesome.

Today I am Scary Writer.

I like your icon, too.
Y'know, I've never understood the psychology of the witch-hunters, to be honest with you. After all, if it's not real, it's harmless; why bother chasing after the poor old woman? But if it is real... they never seemed to consider what that could actually mean, trying to screw with someone who worked magic.
Why? There was money in it, and power. Look for the section on motives in this article:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Spanish-Inquisition

But yeah, you'd think people would know better than to mess with someone who could wield so much magic.
oh my GAWD. That is fan fucking TASTIC!
I'm glad you had fun with it.
Creeepy, and I love it! Thanks for linking me to this!

I try to connect the dots when I think someone will like another poem.
