If your birth family isn't available, you can work on building a family from other sources.

I have some extended family, but not as much as I'd like -- many of them just aren't very compatible with my lifestyle. So I put a lot of energy into the local Pagan community. When it works, it's wonderful. I'm working outside my skill zone, though; sometimes stuff needs done that I am just not up to doing well enough, and then it gets unpleasant. But that's life. You can't let it stop you, if you're serious about building community or family.

When my daughter got married two months back and it was obvious that the logistics were such that none of her blood relatives other than me and her dad could make it, I was able to include some strategically placed fannish friends (who have known her since she was in diapers) in the invite list to be Sharon's "stunt family".
"Stunt family." I must remember that one!
I got the idea for the phrase from some singers at OVFF and GaFilk whose normal guitarist-accompanists weren't along this time, so various stand-ins were recruited and introduced as "stunt guitarists".
