Dealing with Setbacks

[personal profile] dialecticdreamer asked in a recent post, "What does a character do when something goes wrong in their day?"

That depends a lot on the character, their personality, and their level of experience with things going wrong. I couldn't resist listing some of mine ...

Shahana & Ari: fix it and keep going. Things break all the time. Their world is a wreck.

Fiorenza: grumble and fix it. People bring her their troubles all the time.

Victor Frankenstein: either fix it himself (for scientific things) or dither around because he doesn't know what to do having grown up privileged (for quite a lot of practical things). Igor and the villagers pick up a lot of that slack.

Shaeth & Trobby: "I need a drink."

Brenda Cochlain: hit it.

Maryam Smith: tinker, fix it, decide that isn't good enough, fix it again, show it off, get new idea, build a whole nother thingie ...

Evil!Schrodinger: run.

Stalwart Stan: fix it with his backpack full of Be Prepared supplies.

Damask: switch front so the person with most relevant skill can fix it.

Danso: "MOMMMM!!! The washer's broke and there's water all over the floor!"

Haboob: lose his temper and kill some random person(s).

I feel that's selling Danso a little short, though home appliances aren't likely his forte.
It's really not, but you have to know his story arc to get why. Danso is parentified out the wazoo. For him to call Hannah "mom" and ask for help instead of trying to fix everything himself (and you're right, fixing a washer is not a skill he has) is an accomplishment to be savored after several months of hard work on everyone's part.
Yes, and also no. That he can hand off issues to another responsible party rather than trying to handle everything himself is certainly something it'd do him good to understand and practice. He's also competent enough to make calls on immediate actions -- whether the washer should be shut off, or possibly unplugged and the water turned off, and whether he can do that safely.

Mostly, though, as written the response reads as somewhat whiny to me, which isn't how Danso usually reads to me. :}
It's not far from what I yelled the time ours broke and I stepped into an inch of cold water with no warning. That's not a situation where the forebrain is the first thing to answer the alarm for most people. Maybe if you're a plumber.
Fair enough. Mine involved cursing, shutting off the water and gas to a broken water heater, and notifying the landlord.
I did wind up fetching towels to get the water off the floor. my_partner_doug had been sound asleep until I roused the alarm, and he went to shut off the water and later called a plumber. I suspect that Danso, who is a very practical young man, probably wound up going for towels or a mop also. Or keeping several young and inquisitive children from playing in the new indoor kiddie pool.
It also depends on the problem needing to be dealt with. I have at least one character that is good at certain problems, but goes mute and gets flappy-hands with other problems.
That's true for many people. Less common is something I came across in a followup example when someone asked about Groundhog: for him, it's the location of the problem that matters. Indoors, he is a calm and capable problem-solver. Outdoors, it's a lot easier to freak him out.
Nokwahl (Traipah): If it's a criminal, try to catch them normally first. If they're dangerous enough and it looks like they'll get away, she hits them with her Gift (very strongly weaponized projective telempathy), which knocks them down and can even knock them out by overloading their nervous system.

Lyria: Uses her brain and/or her magic.

Jarnion Zakonjo (Lyriaverse): May make a show of bravery until he can size up the problem, then generally runs away in terror. (He has magic but is really shit at it, except for potions.) Unless the problem is obviously beyond him, then he just runs away in terror.

Voluponek (Lyriaverse): Whatever Mother (Lyria) says to do. If she says "be my ride," he becomes her ride. If she says "Tear target into tiny pieces," that's what he does. If he's activated but is given no commands, he just kind of floats there, confused, unless there's a clear and present threat to Mother or other family members. Voluponek is sentient but doesn't really have much in the way of problem solving skills.

Lolita Leigh Smith (Lo series): Lots and lots of snark, mostly.

I wanted to list more, but I couldn't think of any.
Voluponek sounds like he's lacking in executive thinking. Lolita would be fun.
Yeah, Voluponek is interesting in that way. He lacks executive thinking, he's prone to sloth (only works when activated), and unlike the other Reshath (his "species" name), he barely talks. In fact, even Lyria has only heard him say one word in his whole lifetime: "Mother." But that's the thing about Reshath, they're highly individually different.

Lolita is most fun with her girlfriend, B. (Lolita Leigh Smith and Beverly Holden, really, but don't call her Beverly, she hates that. Their nicknames are Lo and Behold. But Behold is usually called B.) They've been friends since kindergarten, and I think they started dating in fifth grade. In school, they were always getting into trouble for doing pranks and being disrespectful of authority, and one of their teachers, whenever she caught them, would say "Lo and behold, the culprits." So they adopted "Lo and Behold" as nicknames.
