Gets a tattoo that's supposedly a Chinese proverb equivalent to "blood is thicker than water" (this page, #5: ).

But it actually says "use other door" (使用其他门) ... or maybe the same in Korean (다른 문을 사용하여), or something else equally silly.

I'm sure you know this stuff happens, and much worse:

Worse, get a tattoo that is actually a curse just before prom, and as a result you kill someone and get a new disability at the same time.
It strikes me that "tying a necktie," "killing someone," and "choosing a profession" go really well together. :-D Which would also fit really well with "first solo trip" and "emancipation." (And, for that matter, fits really well with "coming out.") LOL, so here's an idea: Bi teen comes out before prom, it doesn't go so well. Like, abusive parents. S/he kills one, runs away from the other. Enjoyed killing so much s/he makes a profession of it, becomes a professional hit person. Their specialty? The Colombian necktie.
Though I guess that would be queer coding, which is bad. But you could probably make it better by having them feel guilty about it after a few years, and turn themselves in, thus adding "accepting responsibility" to it.

I think it's meant to be a path.
