Poem: "The Lair of Tomes"

This poem is from the March 4, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] alexseanchai, [personal profile] jjhunter, [personal profile] redsixwing, and [personal profile] rosieknight. It also fills the "teaching or learning" square in my Wordsmith Bingo card. This poem has been sponsored by [personal profile] janetmiles.

"The Lair of Tomes"

When the world fell apart
into petty religious wars
and a hundred little kingdoms
all squabbling for control,

knowledge would have been lost
in the sack of cities and
the looting of monasteries
all up and down the coast.

It was the dragons
who prevented the worst ravages
from happening, who spoke
to booksellers and scribes
and scholars of all types,
urging them to gather up
whatever could be saved.

There were whole cave systems
in the high cold mountains
lined with yards of bookcases
and with rickety wine racks
pressed into service for holding scrolls.

Even the young dragons
got into the project,
carefully balancing books
between their baby horns
as they carried stacks here and there.

They would wait
until enough time passed
that humans would again
come to value knowledge

and then they would begin to search
for someone to teach it all too,
someone who would become
the heir to the Lair of Tomes.

That hoard collection sounds cool. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem so much!
Y'know, this and "Alpha Blight" almost go together as two sides of the same story.
Fascinating. I hadn't thought of that.
