kirigami mage
trudges along the damp beach
the waves at her feet
wetting the hem of her robes
as she walks toward her rival
she is tired, now,
of the chasing and fighting;
all rivers run down
to the ocean in the end
and become one with the tide
origami mage
enfolds the words of Mazu
like a blue lotus,
hidden bloom within her heart
grown from the muck of the past
she is hopeful, now,
that what has been between them
may begin to change
into what is yet to be
opening a slow flower
they sit together
on a stone by the ocean
hearing its whispers
and the sounds of each other's
heartbeats like two muffled drums
the sea is deeper
than all of their enmity
and longer than their
history could ever be,
the moon's eternal partner
origami mage
explains what Mazu told her:
"We need common ground
in which we can plant the seeds
of our future together."
kirigami mage
listens to her, then replies:
"We've studied different
masters and different virtues,
but we both follow the Wheel."
above them the moon
rolls brightly in the dark sky;
beyond the breakers,
a pod of black-and-white whales
are dancing the taijitu
origami mage
and kirigami mage sit
side-by-side, watching
lessons in enlightenment,
studying them together

Notes:
The taijitu is a Taoist symbol representing the dynamic balance of yin and yang.
