That 3 AM Call

Here's an interesting scenario:

Paul Krugman | The 3 AM Call
Paul Krugman, The New York Times: "It's 3 a.m., a few months into 2009, and the phone in the White House rings. Several big hedge funds are about to fail, says the voice on the line, and there's likely to be chaos when the market opens. Whom do you trust to take that call?"

I don't want to ask the candidates. I want to ask their children. Kids, when you overspent and asked for an advance on your allowance, did your parents say no or did they give you more money?

That's the kind of "family values" I care about. Does the family teach responsible spending/saving habits? Or do parents teach kids to live beyond their means?

I don't know enough about the bailout to make an informed decision. But what you described is what we try to do with our daughter.

What we need to avoid doing is saying "okay, we owe you $10 for your allowance because you did these chores" and NOT paying her until much later. I fear she is learning how to not pay debts properly.
Being the language aficionado that you are, I thought you might enjoy this article about diagramming Palin's speeches.
That's a fascinating way to study how incoherent people can be.
Yes, it's made me think about 2 things:

1. I couldn't pinpoint why I found Palin's remarks to be so... fluffy during the debate tonight, but this article put it into perspective.

2. I am going to think a lot harder about how I say things when I am speaking in meetings at work!
