Poem: "The Mad Science of Modern Times"

This poem came out of the October 7, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony Barrette.  It also fills the "cause and effect" square in my 9-29-14 card for the Origfic Bingo Fest.

The Mad Science of Modern Times

Creationists believe that
God made the world in six days.

Climate change deniers believe that
global warming is a hoax.

No amount of facts can shake their faith;
they are convinced that these things are so.

They know that others prefer science to religion,
so they couch their tenets in those terms.

They use the glossary of science
but not the substance of it.

They begin with a conclusion
and then seek evidence to support it.

They may not be clinically insane,
and they certainly are not scientific,

but they fill the role of mad scientists
in these modern times.

They remind us that it is not monsters we should fear,
but the effects of our own foolishness.

Notes:

Creationism is the belief that God created the world literally in six days.  As people try to push creationism into schools, this undermines education.

Global warming is already happening, yet people continue to deny it.  This threatens the survival of the human species and the diversity of the biosphere.

These and other anti-science ideologies jeopardize a sustainable society.  That's because facts will bite you on the ass whether you believe in them or not.

The thing that always drives me buggy about creationism is it's about truth. And science is about, well, science - not truth, but the best damn model that fits the data. Science doesn't give a flying, uh, fornication at a rolling doughnut if God created the universe in six days - it cares that the universe looks billions of years old, and life's genesis on earth is best modeled via evolution.

(People can and do point out that "God created the earth 6000 years ago in 6 days" is rationally equivalent to last-Tuesdayism - the belief that God created the universe last Tuesday, with all memories and artifacts intact. Yes, he created the books of the major religions too - to test the faithful.)
