If you've not read Defoe's 'A Journal of the Plague Year' (it's a very effective fictional account) I'd strongly recommend it!
Huh, there was some details there I didn't know, like the use of waxed cloth and the contracts... those probably actually would work.

Kind of makes you wonder what we'll think of current haz-mat protocols in 500 years time...assuming anyone's around by then. [not necessarily a given if we're talking pandemic plagues.]
