Companies Listen to Consumers

Gosh, this just makes me want to go out and buy me some chocolate chips:

Food companies reject clones over consumer fears

NESTLÉ and Kraft don't care that cloned animals are safe to eat - they can't sell cloned products if consumers won't buy them.

US pressure groups the Center for Food Safety and Friends of the Earth say that 20 food companies they asked would not sell cloned food - even though both the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority ruled this year that food from cloned animals is safe to eat.

People have a right to make their own food decisions. Maybe they don't think cloning is moral, or safe, or whatever. It doesn't matter. They deserve to know what's in a product before they decide whether or not to buy it. So I'm thrilled to see some companies responding to consumer outcries against cloned products in food.

As for cloning itself, I'm actually in favor of it, if it's responsibly done. Not many companies meet my standards for "responsibly" in anything, though, so I'm a bit leery of cloned products in food.

Interestingly enough, I ran out of Fair Trade coffee, and in a serious coffee jones, headache and all, hied me to Wal-Mart in search of desperately needed caffeine. And there on the shelves I saw Sam's Choice...

...Fair Trade Coffee?

Considering how they treat their workers, Fair Trade is the last thing I'd expect to see at Wally. Truly, the market hath power.
