Make a Self-Soothing Kit

[personal profile] dialecticdreamer has written an excellent post on how to make and use a self-soothing kit.  This is a small collection of items that you find comforting, which engage your senses with something positive instead of negative.  It is essential for trauma survivors, but frankly advisable for everyone in the exact same way that a first-aid kit for physical complaints is.  This kind of thing is a basic form of emotional first-aid.  Everybody has bad things happen to them sometimes, so you should know how to cope.

Come to think of it, shaman's usually carry a kit of ritual objects around, that would also serve that function.
Yes -- using the kit would be basically a kind of calming ritual, always using the same objects in the same ways.

Calming spells are handy too.
Excellent suggestions! I tend to spiral into agitated. Thank you!
I'm glad I could help.

Just knowing about the problem makes it easier to solve. You can do a lot of good by stopping the spiral. There are many ways to overcome intrusive thoughts, break a negative spiral, and focus yourself on something else. The sensory anchors and comfort items in a self-help kit are one good example. The more techniques you have, the more things you can try when the brain weasels attack.
