Scrapbooking rivets and brads would probably work well. I'm driven a little batty at how scrapbook stores aim at a part of the market and run off the stationary stores that were hanging on. That's not on the scrappers.
I have the same problem with chain fabric stores/craft stores. They are aimed at an entry crowd, that's got more pocket change than expertise. (I wouldn't have what expertise I do, but that some of those skills were common enough and scraps plentiful enough...) I remember five and dimes having better depth of certain products.
