Island Nations and Global Warming

As global warming raises sea levels, a lot of land is going to disappear. Imagine the prospect of having your whole country go under. That's likely to happen to some people. Imagine having large numbers of environmental refugees set adrift in a world that doesn't want the refugees we already have. Consider signing the petition...

Small Islands to World: S.O.S.
For the first time in human history, the North Pole can be circumnavigated -- the Arctic ice is melting quicker than many anticipated. The devastating effects of climate change are also accelerating sea level rise and small island nations are preparing evacuation plans to guarantee the survival of their populations.

In a week, these small islands are tabling a resolution calling on the UN Security Council to address climate change as a pressing threat to international peace and security.

But the island states' campaign for survival is meeting fierce opposition, so they need our help. Sign the petition now -- it will be presented by the islands' ambassadors at the UN next week.

I was talking with a friend from Canada about this the other day. He is a grad student in aerospace, and he was telling me about his senior design project, which was to develop a proposal for a constellation satellite system to monitor the Northwest Passage. It seems that since the ice around there has started melting, the Northwest Passage is passable for ships for the first time. Since the entire area falls under Canadian jurisdiction, the Canadians do not want anyone going through it without their permission. However, they do not have the ability to enforce that militarily. So they have decided to try enforcing it with satellites instead. Not directly related to your topic I know, but peripherally related, and interesting.
That sounds interesting.

Canada is on thin ice, though: any time a nation makes claims that it can't back up with force, it's likely that someone stronger will simply take what they want and beat the tar out of the claimant. Most global politics sadly boils down to might-makes-right.
