A Little Slice of Terramagne: YardMap
Sadly the main program is dormant, but the YardMap concept is awesome, and many of its informative articles remain. YardMap was a citizen science…

Goldenrod Gall Contents
Apparently all kinds of things go on inside goldenrod galls, beyond the caterpillars who make them. Fascinating. I've seen the galls but haven't…

Science and Spirituality
Here's an article about science and spirituality, sort of. It doesn't have a very wide view of either. Can you be scientific and spiritual? This…

Then I got to thinking about the WHY behind it all....
Finally I realized that it had a lot to do with the fact that most male characters just don't wag around all the emotional baggage that most female characters do!
Talk about knocking me over with a feather--but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I'm just plain TIRED of all the female characters who worry, worry, worry about their weight, their makeup, their hair, their clothes, the fact that they are single moms, the fact that they want to be moms and they have no prospective romantic partners in sight and they are in their late thirties.
You know the plot line I'm most tired of: How hard they have to struggle simply because they are women trying to make it in a man's world!
YES! It's gotten OLD AND TIRED AND WORN-the-heck-OUT! (Hollywood has been pounding along on that plotline since the 1970's at least.)
Men struggle in Real Life to become successful too but for some reason nobody ever writes about MEN worrying about their physical appearance or their clothes. A successful man in a position of power is relaxed and confident and able to smile about little stuff. A successful woman in a position of power always seems to be portrayed as struggling to hang onto it--she's never comfortable OR relaxed. (The Devil Wears Prada comes to mind here.)
Nobody ever writes romantic novels from an ordinary man's perspective either. Although there's gobs and gobs of pornography about him getting lucky, I honestly cannot think of ANYTHING I've seen or read that had an ordinary guy getting all sweaty and nervous about first getting a date with his dream girl much less discussing it endlessly with his most trusted confidents unless it's in a comedy. There's nothing out there about him steadily trying to herd her in the direction of the preacher either.
My last reason why I prefer male characters to female characters is simply because male characters HAVE MORE FUN! Male characters get to go off on adventures which sometimes last several years and they do it without worrying whether they'll be able to find a date for Saturday night or bringing along 6 suitcases stuffed full of clothes.

In the meantime, I'm making projects like Schrodinger's Heroes and The Blueshift Troupers.

I think some of this is the historical construction of the female consumer. She is to be sold that she's imperfect and only by purchasing can she achieve happiness. Men are curried, they have success, this is a reward or a signal of that, has been the traditional messaging.
I'd have loved if Sam Carter hadn't been taken that doomed 'shipping route and did they really need her not noticing that Pete was a stalker?
It's a failure of creativity.

I agree. I think there's a ton of money to be made by identifying an actual audience and then looking at their needs to choose advertising. You know what a lot of women want? Peace and quiet. Try advertising for affordable vacation spots, or appliances that don't make any noise.

Agreed. It leads to boring, predictable content. I want different and better stories.
Television has evolved the point that I can't really watch it anymore. There are popups and other things that interrupt the viewing experience. The ads themselves often contain loathesome things. The show quality is usually poor. Why would I put up with the unpleasantness? I've just given up on TV. I tolerate it if someone else turns it on, and occasionally I'll buy a show on DVD. But it's gotten to where I feel used instead of entertained, and I don't like feeling like a toilet seat. That makes me seek out other things to do with my time.
This is one thing I love about crowdfunding. It's not just the targeted content, but the appreciation. The people I patronize with prompts and occasional donations are happy to see me. They don't treat me like a commodity or a criminal. They treat me like a friend. I feel like I'm contributing to something positive.

So it's Animal Planet and the Science Channel, mostly. Since those still have shows about animals and making things.

They're nowhere near as good as they used to be, though. The channels are like a paint set halfway through a kindergarten art class: everything slopping onto everything else.
I remember when cooking shows used to be safe and pleasant and reliable. Now a lot of them are just people screaming verbal abuse at each other. The last one I saw was so slutty it was a complete turnoff. Just the one woman, but she kept doing and saying things that made it sound like she was coming on to the audience. Stop waving your tits at me and pay attention to the food before you light something on fire. Gah. Awful.
