My parents usually let my sister and me play with the cardboard boxes left over from moving so often; my favorite was to turn huge wardrobe boxes into rocket ships and submarines.
These would have fit perfectly into my family's fairly limited budget, as most of my big toy sets came from my grandparents, but we almost always had a pack of drinking straws around.
