So now it's America's Fault?

Riiiiiiight. I may take an extremely dim view of America's foreign policy these days, but I rather doubt this disaster is fairly faulted.

Putin Asserts Link Between US Election and Georgia War
Philip P. Pan and Jonathan Finer, The Washington Post: "Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Thursday that he had reason to think U.S. personnel were in the combat zone during the recent war in Georgia, adding that if confirmed, their presence suggested 'someone in the United States' provoked the conflict to help one of the candidates in the American presidential race. In Putin's first extended remarks defending Russia's military intervention in Georgia, which has drawn international condemnation, he blamed the Bush administration for failing to stop Georgian leaders from launching the Aug. 7 attack on the breakaway province of South Ossetia that sparked the war."

Besides, we're busy with domestic insanity for the next few months. Putin -- call us in December if you're still having trouble locating your butt, and we'll send a search party for your head. Meanwhile, try using both hands.

You know, that really sounds to me like a dorky attempt to pass the buck on the most popular scapegoat. Unfortunately the U.S. seems to have such a screw-up reputation that we're probably the first ones to try pointing at if someone's having a "Not My Fault" crisis. Ugh.
I hadn't thought about it before, but now that I have, I think you're absolutely right: the U.S. has become the obvious choice for global scapegoat, given the plummeting reputation and various very public screwups. How depressing.
I am very very disturbed by Putin.
Yes, Putin is worrisome. It would be helpful to have more diplomatic and forethoughtful people in politics.

I heard reports that Blackwater mercenaries had been fighting on the Georgian side in South Ossetia early on. Not American soldiers, but very easy to sell to the Russian populace as such.
Oops, thought I was signed in. That was me.
I've heard that Blackwater is expected to keep the peace in New Orleans if Gustav creates the same kind of chaos that Katrina did. Heh ... they'll be luck if they survive that assignment. I'm darkly amused by the irony.
