But yeah, a human face reading algorithm could be used to control the virtual ears, instead of the face-rig just texture mapping onto the human face. The only problem I see is that it would significantly increase the code, and thus computing time, introducing lag. Which wouldn't be a problem with an extra control channel.

That could work. There's a robotic tail as well as ears.

I don't think it should complicate the code much. The face-reading tech is already there; this just adds a fairly simple subset of changes onto the stuff that's already changing. Lock the ear position to other expressions and it doesn't have to tie up as much decision-making bandwidth; or put it on puppet control, which seems to be an option for some other stuff already.
